Types of lasers used in ophthalmic surgery
Currently, lasers are widely used in various fields of medicine. The situation is no different with ophthalmic surgery. It uses medical lasers to remove cataracts, glaucoma, correct vision defects or treat various diseases of the retina. The use of a laser in these cases is necessary because of its accuracy, sterility and speed of operation. What types of lasers are most common in ophthalmology? Why medical lasers?Lasers have been used in ophthalmic surgery since about the early 1980s.
Three types of lasers are commonly used in ophthalmic surgery: YAG lasers, argon lasers and excimer lasers. Each of them is used to perform various types of treatment, or rather to treat other areas of the eye. Due to the high accuracy of laser treatment, their capabilities are really great, and without the use of this type of device it would be impossible to effectively treat cataracts, correct visual defects or treat retinal diseases.
What types of lasers are used exactly?
Yag lasers
These types of lasers are used to treat diseases and conditions of the anterior segment of the eye, primarily for the surgical treatment of cataracts and glaucoma. In the case of cataract treatment, the laser acts as a surgical knife, with which the surgeon removes the damaged lens, leaving the lens bag intact. Thanks to this, an artificial lens of the eye can then be implanted in this place. In turn, in the case of surgical treatment of glaucoma, a YAG laser is used to alleviate its symptoms. Using a laser improves the outflow of fluid from the eye, which allows you to see.
Argon lasers
Argon lasers are used to treat diseases of the posterior segment of the eye. The so-called green lasers are therefore used to treat diseases of the retina of the eye. The laser beam is used to treat local inflammation in the retinal pigment epithelium. After the procedure and the beginning of the treatment process, instead of inflammation, scars appear that connect the edges of the retina and prevent its detachment. Argon lasers are also used, for example, in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, which is an extremely common complication in diabetics.
Excimer lasers
The last type of lasers in ophthalmic surgery are excimer lasers. These types of lasers are used to treat the cornea of the eye, i.e. primarily for laser vision correction. Excimer lasers can be used to remove both myopia and hyperopia, as well as astigmatism.
